A PROJECT ORIENTED TO THE FUTURE
Orienteering is a sport that respects the environment.
For that reason the organisers of Highlands Open 2006 defined a Environmental Policy in line with the guidelines set by the FISO Environment Committee, so that orienteering can become a sport with lower and lower environmental impact.

ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY OF HIGHLANDS OPEN
The organisers of Highlands Open assume the respect of the environment as a concrete and fundamental commitment that must be sustained and developed in all the activities related to the planning and carrying out of an orienteering competition.
The organisers therefore undertake to take into account the environmental aspects, both by the members of the organising
committee and by the competitors. The commitment is focused on the respect of the environmental laws and all the applicable rules in order to ensure the respect, conservation and protection of the environment, preventing and limiting pollution.
The commitment is implemented by pursuing the following goals:

a) to promote responsibility and environmental care among the organising committee and people who participate directly and indirectly to the competitions;

b) to promote the principles of the sustainability;

c) to adopt suitable policies of protection of the Plant Life and the Wildlife, according to competition area and the connected risk

d) to contain the environmental impact of the waste through:
- buying preferably family package, 1-2 litre bottle, or better, whenever possible, using local water (aqueduct and/or fountains); avoiding if possible the use of single use disposable package (snack, small bottles, etc.).
- preferring bottles and containers in recyclable material
- predisposing special containers and/or bags for the diversified collection of the waste
- communicating the correct procedures of waste collection during the competition through suitable leaflets and special signs
- buying biodegradable cutlery and glasses for a separated waste collection
- using of recycled paper for the printing of all the promotional materials
- using of natural, low environmental impact or reusable materials
- assuring that all the structures are removed at the end of the competition, leaving the environment in the same conditions as before to the competition and, whenever possible, improving the existing situation

e) to stimulate the “sustainable mobility” through the indication on the event leaflets and website of the public transportation connections and the promotion of car-pooling, through the predisposition (if possible) of a special parking for vehicles with at least 3 passengers

f) a prizes selection taking into consideration the sustainable development (ex. "nature prizes", useful prizes, not “use and throw away”, preferably acquired in the fair trade circuit)
